So the next time you come across your favourite scene in a movie or a video clip on Youtube and want to share it with your friends or family, you must be looking for how to make a gif from videos.

The best part about GIF’s is that as much as they are fun, they are easy to make too. There are many options available to make GIF’s, such as from videos, online apps, Photoshop, etc. All these methods are easy to use and give you the freedom to add your own effects, animations, etc. to them.

Here in this tutorial, I shall be explaining you three methods of creating GIF’s, i.e., from iPhone, Photoshop and Youtube videos.

How To Make a GIF in Photoshop

You can use Photoshop to turn a series of images into looping animated GIF’s. This technique works well in case you want to create a timelapse animation using the photos taken using the DSLR, or even an iPhone. If you want to create a GIF from a short video, then this is the perfect option for you.

So the following steps will teach you how to animate a picture in photoshop. I use Creative Cloud 2015 version of Photoshop, but the steps are similar in other versions too.

Step 1: Import a series of photos, of which you want to create an animated GIF, into Photoshop.

Click on File>Scripts>Load Files Into Stack

Step 2: Select Browse and choose the files which you want to use in GIF. Click on OK.

Photoshop will convert the photos into a single-layered file.

Step 3: Note that Photoshop will create a number of new layers in the Layers panel on the right side of your workspace.

If You Don’t Have a Series of Images Created:

Go to Layer>New>Layer. Make sure to name each layer so that you can keep track of them sequentially when you will make your GIF.

To name a Layer, go to the Layer panel at the bottom-right of your screen and double-click on the default layer name. Then type in the desired name of the layer as you want. Press Enter once you have finished.

Pro TipIf you want to merge the layers so that they create the effect of appearing in a single frame in your GIF, then simply turn on the “eye” at the left of each layer name so that the eyes for the layers you want to merge remain open.  Next, press Shift + Command + Option + E (Mac) or Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E (Windows). A new layer containing the merged content will be created by Photoshop which you must rename.

Create New Frame By Opening Timeline Window

Step 4: Now open the Timeline Window. For that, go to Windows>Timeline. From there, click on Create Frame Animation.

Step 5: To create a layer for each frame, first select all the layers by clicking on Select>All Layers.

Step 6: From the dropdown menu that appears, click on Create New Layer For Each New Frame.

Convert Layers Into Animation Frames

To convert all the layers in the Layers panel into individual frames, click on the main menu of the Timeline Panel again.

Step 7: From the menu, choose “Make Frames From Layers”.

Now click on the Play button at the bottom of the timeline panel (or press the Spacebar) to preview the animation.

If you choose to play the animation in reverse, then click on the Menu and click on Reverse frames.

Give Timeframe To Your Animation

Choose how long a frame can appear before it transitions to another frame.

Step 8: For this, click below each frame and choose how long would you like it to appear. For instance, I have chosen 0.5 seconds per frame.

Choose the Duration of the Animation Loop

The default option would be set to One. But you can change it to as many times as you want.

Step 9: Click on the Repeat menu at the bottom of the Timeline and select Forever. This set your animation into a loop.

Step 10: Now click on the Play button from the bottom of the Timeline menu to preview your animation (or press the Spacebar in your keyboard)

Save And Export Your GIF

Step 11: You can save your GIF for online use in the future. Go to the top panel and click File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)…

Step 12: Now choose the preset under which you would like to save your GIF. Select Dithered GIF to avoid colour banding.

Step 13: Choose a higher Dithering percentage for your GIF. It is indicated against your GIF file.

Now you can proudly show off your GIF to your online friends and share it in your social media!! Way to go!
