The process of taking a screenshot in Windows is completely different from iOS, and it contains lots of shortcuts and methods to take screenshots (called “screen capture”). This post shall explain to you all the methods of taking screenshots in Windows.

How To Take Screenshot on Windows 8

You must be using Windows 8 software for a long time in your PC or laptop but most of you must not be knowing of a shortcut to take a screenshot in-built in Windows 8. This shortcut lets you capture everything that is on screen. This feature will be available to you only if you update to the latest version of Windows 8.

There are four ways to take a screenshot in Windows 8. Let us look at each of the methods in detail.

Short Cut Method: Full-Screen Screenshot (Win+PrtScrn)

  • Go to the Start Screen by pressing the Windows button on your laptop or PC or by clicking on the Windows icon on the screen.

  • Now select an app of your choice and launch it by clicking on it.
  • To take a screenshot within the app, press and hold the Windows button on your PC or laptop and press the Print Screen “Prt Scn” on your keyboard.
  • To access your screenshot, click on Windows+E on your keyboard. You would be taken to My Computer and there you would find the Screenshot folder. Click on it.

  • On opening the Screenshots folder, you would find the screenshots arranged in chronological order according to date. Select the screenshot which you have taken.

  • It will now open in a new screen. Insert it into blog, article or wherever you need to insert it.

Using Snipping Tool 

Windows version 7 & higher has the in-built option for Snipping Tool. This useful tool lets you have control over the area which you need to capture. Here are the simple steps which you can follow to take a screenshot using Snipping Tool :

  • Go to the Start Menu by pressing the Windows button on your screen or the Windows icon at the bottom-left of your screen.
  • Now start typing “Snipping Tool” in the search box in the Start screen and click on Snipping Tool from the search results.
  • Now from the menu bar above click on “Mode”.
  • A drop-down menu shall appear. Choose from the options that will appear such as Free-Form Snip, Rectangular Snip, Windows Snip, etc.
  • If the screenshot has not come as you expected, you can take a new snip by clicking on the “New” option from the menu bar.
  • If you are satisfied with your snip, you can save it by going on File>Save As. By default, your screenshot shall be saved in the Screenshots folder. Alternatively, you can save your snip by clicking on Ctrl+S from your keyboard.
  • Your screenshot shall be saved. You can access the screenshot by pressing Win+E and opening the Screenshots folder.

Note:  The Snipping tool option does not work with open menus or pop-up menus. In such cases, if you attempt to take a screenshot of it, the menu shall close.

Using Keyboard Shortcut: Windows+PrtScrn

The best part about using Windows software is that you can take a screenshot using the Windows+Print screen shortcut irrespective of the version you are using. This allows you to take the screenshot of the entire screen. Here are the steps to take a screenshot using this nifty keyboard shortcut:

  • Open the app or the web page of which you want to take a screenshot and press Windows+Print screen (Win+Prt Scrn) from your keyboard.
  • Your screenshot shall be captured. By default, it shall be saved in the Screenshots Folder. You can access it pressing Win+E.
  • Using the Print screen allows the image to be saved in your system’s Clipboard. You can open, view and edit it using any editor app such as Photo Viewer, Paint, etc.

Note:   If you have opened multiple displays, the Print Screen option shall take the screenshot of all the open windows of the image.

Using Windows Snipping Tool

As mentioned before, Windows provides the built-in facility of Snipping Tool in for Windows 7 and above. Here are the steps to use the Snipping Tool:

  • Go to the Windows Start menu by pressing on the Windows button from the keyboard.
  • To open the Snipping Tool, click on Start>All Programs> Snipping Tools.
  • Open the screen you would like to take a screenshot of.
  • Then press Ctrl+Prt Scrn.
  • Now from the menu bar at the top, click on New and select Free Form, Rectangular and Windows from the options.
  • Now control the portion of the area of the screen you want to snip as you desire.

After taking the screenshot, there are many options to edit the screenshot:

  • Highlighter
  • Pen
  • Eraser

How To Take a Printout:

Follow these steps to take a printout of the screenshot:

  • Open the file where you saved the Screenshot (Windows Photo Viewer by default) and open the screenshot,
  • Click Print to open the Print dialog screen and after selecting all the settings, give the Print command.
  • You can save the screenshot for future reference in H: drive of your computer.

How To Take a Printout on Windows 10

Windows 10 offers many options to take a screenshot of a screen or a portion of a screen. The built-in options available in Windows 10 is great for taking screenshots, but you can use third-party apps too. Here we shall explain you the methods to take screenshots in various ways in Windows 10.

#1  Quick Screenshot (Using Windows+Prt Scrn. option)

Using the Print Screen option you can take a screenshot and save it as a file, take a screenshot without saving it as a file or take a screenshot of a single window (instead of the whole screen).

To Take a Screenshot As a File

  • Click on the Windows+Prt scrn options from your keyboard. On some laptops, you might have to press “Windows logo key + Ctrl + PrtScn” or “Windows logo key + Fn + PrtScn” keys instead. You can check your laptop’s manual for the same.
  • The screen will dim for a moment and your image shall be saved in the screenshots folder in your computer. The screenshot is automatically labelled as a number which you can change anytime.

  • Click on the “Prt Scrn” button on your computer or laptop.
  • The screenshot of the whole screen is now saved in your device’s Clipboard.
  • You can paste it in your favourite Image Editor by pasting it.
  • On some devices, you might have to click on A”lt+Fn+PrtScrn”.

To Take Screenshot of a Part of Your Screen

  • Click on “Windows+Shift+S”.
  • Your screen shall appear greyed out. Your mouse cursor shall also change that will enable you to drag and draw over the screen to select the desired portion for taking a screenshot.
  • There shall be three options for taking a screenshot: Rectangular screenshot, Free-form screenshot and Full-screenshot.
  • Choose an option and take a screenshot.
  • The screenshot shall be saved into your device’s Clipboard.
  • You can now paste it into your favourite editor such as Paint by clicking on Paste.

Note: This feature only works using Window’s Creators Update. In the older versions, this is a part of One Note but now it has been added to Windows.

#2 Using The Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool feature is a really useful in-built feature present in all the latest version of the Windows. It allows us to have more flexibility and control over taking a Screenshot. There are new updated and features which have been added to the Snipping Tool in Windows Tool.

One of the useful features present in Snipping Tool in Windows 10 which is not present in Windows 8 is that you can take the screenshot of menu or pop-ups without closing the Snipping Tool. In earlier, you would require the Print Screen option to take such a screenshot.

Here’s how you can use the new Snipping Tool:

  • From the Start Menu, type and search Snipping Tool. Click on the result.
  • There you would find many options for taking a screenshot, such as Free-Form Snip, Rectangular Snip, Window Snip and Full-Screen  Snip.
  • Choose an option and capture the screenshot.
  • You can edit the snips with various editing tools available, such as different coloured highlighters. You can save it as an image or MHTML file.

If you want to take the screenshot of a menu, you can do so by selecting the Delay option. This will allow you to take a screenshot of a menu or tooltips.

  • From the drop-down menu, select the delay time until you want to take the screenshot.
  • Now click on Mode next to New and select the type of snip you want to take.
  • Unlike the regular snip, the screenshot shall not be taken immediately, but after a time delay which you have set.

#3 Use Sketch & Snip Tool

The Windows 10 features new Snip and Sketch tool, which allows users to edit their sketch over their screenshots once they have been taken. The process is similar to that of the Snipping Tool, the only difference is that it allows you to sketch over your screenshot.
